Fine Art Print Handling and Care

The archival life and longevity of colour are dependent on several factors besides the initial use of quality archival materials meeting museum standards.

To ensure that your prints will last you a lifetime there are a few basic guidelines you should adhere to:

  1. Take care when removing your print from the protective packaging that it is delivered in as finger prints from glossy surfaces can be extremely difficult to remove and scratches impossible.
  2. We recommend as soon as possible your photographic print be professionally mounted and framed using acid-free products behind glass or other UV filtering material to protect them from environmental and atmospheric contaminants such as cigarette smoke, high levels of ozone and humidity.
  3. Do not hang the print in direct sunlight or near a source of heat as this will drastically effect the colour stability of the image over time.
  4. Do not hang the print in areas of high humidity as besides being detrimental to the print its self, it can cause wooden frames to twist and bend. The bathroom or similar wet areas are not a good place for any artwork.
  5. If you are unable to frame your print immediately then it should be stored in its protective packaging away from heat, humidity or sunlight. Preferably in a cool dark place.

Please remember these are only guidelines and it is up to the customer to take care of their print to maximise it’s lifespan.

Should you wish to purchase products that are suitable for hanging in high humidity, wet or outdoor environments please contact us for suitable recommendations.

For example we can offer an aluminium product where by the image is pressed directly onto an aluminium sheet which provides a waterproof finish and is perfect for bathrooms, kitchens and alfresco areas.

Print Editions

Limited Edition Photographic Prints

Certain images are designated as limited edition prints. These are selected by Garry and quite often represent his favourites.

Only a limited number of these will ever be printed. For most images this is constrained to 50 prints, with a handful of images at 100. Once this number has been reached, regardless of print size, no more photographic prints will be made available for purchase.

The only exception will be the reproduction of the Limited Edition images in small scale unsigned products such as calendars, photo books, place mats and coasters etc. This further adds value to your photographic print as it advertises the image and can increase the desirability of a particular image and thus potential value.

Additionally to further add value to the investment the price will be increased as the number of prints are sold. This ensures that the value of a print increases with time despite still being available for sale.

All Limited edition prints are closely inspected to ensure that they are the best quality reproduction available.

Each print is hand signed and numbered in the bottom right hand corner. You will also receive a signed certificate of authenticity that should be kept with the image (many people attach this to the back of the framed image).

A register is kept of all sales with the original owners details. Once a set has been sold out, we may contact the original owners as brokers to resell their print to prospective buyers.

Single Edition Photographic Prints

Very occasionally we may also offer some very rare limited edition prints with a print run of only one. Thus you will have the opportunity purchase the sole print offered for sale with the registration number “1 of 1”.

These will be advertised via this website on a first in best dressed basis and typically sold at a premium to reflect the rare nature of the item.

Like the Limited Edition prints above, reproduction of unsigned small scale products such as calendars, photo books, place mats and coasters etc may take place. This further adds value to your photographic print as it advertises the image and can increase the desirability of a particular image and thus potential value.

All Single Edition prints are closely inspected to ensure that they are the best quality reproduction available.

Each print is hand signed and numbered “1 of 1” in the bottom right hand corner. You will also receive a signed certificate of authenticity that should be kept with the image (many people attach this to the back of the framed image).

A register is kept of all sales with the original owners details. Post sale, we may contact the original owners as brokers to resell their print to prospective buyers.

Open Edition Photographic Prints

For all other images where it has not been designated as a Limited or Single Edition run, they are classed as open edition.

All open edition prints will be hand signed in the bottom right hand corner, but they will not receive an edition number. Therefore there will be no limit to the number of prints produced in the future.

If for some reason you do not wish for your print to be hand signed, please notify when making your order.

Pearl

310gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100years.

A low gloss, slightly textured photographic paper with a non-reflective finish with superb clarity, high sharpness and excellent colour gamut.

The high-density heavyweight base and smooth pearl finish with a natural photographic white tint, produces prints with the true look and feel of a photograph.

Ideal for all images, both colour and black and white, especially where finger marks could cause issues when using a high gloss media.

A great choice for wide gamut colour images destined to be framed behind glass minimising internal reflections that are possible with high gloss media.

Unless specified otherwise in the cart comments at check out, this is the default media for all colour and monochrome prints when “Premium Photographic Print” is selected in the shopping cart.

Gloss

310gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100years.

Smooth gloss finish creates the look and feel of a superior photographic print, with superb clarity, high sharpness and excellent colour gamut.

Particularly suited to vivid colour images where maximum detail and clarity is required.

Still a great choice for wide gamut colour images destined to be framed behind glass, however requires some consideration to internal reflections that are possible with high gloss media. Suggest a high quality non-reflective glass is used to minimise reflections.

Metallic

290gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100years.

Metallic Gloss offers the ability to print images with a true ‘wow’ factor. The iridium finish gives every image a three-dimensional look ensuring that each print truly comes to life.

Particularly suited to vivid colour images with foreground rocks or trees where maximum detail, clarity and additional “pop” is required.

Still a great choice for wide gamut colour images destined to be framed behind glass, however requires some consideration to internal reflections that are possible with high gloss media. Suggest a high quality non-reflective glass is used to minimise reflections.

Matt Smooth (Photo Rag)

308gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100years.

A white high-density heavyweight 100% cotton paper with a smooth matte surface texture delivering guaranteed archival standards. With its premium matte inkjet coating it meets the highest industry standards regarding density, colour gamut, colour graduation and image sharpness while preserving the special touch and feel of genuine art paper.

It is the most popular paper chosen to create high quality fine art prints. The fine, smooth surface and feel of Photo Rag make this paper very versatile and it is ideal for printing both black and white and colour photographs and art reproductions with impressive pictorial depth.

The 100% cotton paper’s smooth matte texture eliminates glare and fingerprints, producing prints with a fine art feel and look. Perfect for exhibition or ultra-premium displays either glass framed or simply matted.

Matte Textured (Photo Rag)

220gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100years.

A bright white high-density heavyweight 100% cotton paper with a slight surface texture delivering guaranteed archival standards. With its premium matte inkjet coating it meets the highest industry standards regarding density, colour gamut, colour graduation and image sharpness while preserving the special touch and feel of genuine art paper.

It is the first choice for all users who prefer an especially bright white cotton paper. Slightly more textured than the smooth version, whilst still brilliant for colour, truly excels when used for high contrast black and white prints.

The 100% cotton paper’s textured matte surface eliminates glare and fingerprints, producing prints with a fine art feel and look. Perfect for exhibition or ultra-premium displays either glass framed or simply matted.

Unless specified otherwise in the cart comments at check out, this is the default media for all black and white prints when “Fine Art Specialty Photographic Print” is selected in the shopping cart.

Satin (Photo Rag)

310gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100 plus years.

A white, high density heavyweight 100% cotton paper  with a satin (low level gloss) surface delivering guaranteed archival standards. With its premium satin inkjet coating it meets the highest industry standards regarding density, colour gamut, colour graduation and image sharpness while preserving the special touch and feel of genuine art paper.

This 100% cotton paper bestows fine art photographs with a soft sheen, minimising glare and finger prints. It renders mirror and gloss effects particularly well. The unprinted areas remain matt. Perfect for exhibition or ultra-premium displays either glass framed or simply matted.

A great choice for wide gamut colour images destined to be framed behind glass minimising internal reflections that are possible with high gloss media.

Baryta (Photo Silk)

310gsm weight with an archival rating of approximately 100 plus years.

A white, silk gloss baryta paper that gives the impression of a traditional silver halide photo paper. The unique barium sulphate coating ensures an extraordinary image result with a very large colour space, creamy shades of white and velvety deep black.

A high colour density and brilliance of this paper guarantee an impressive sharpness of detail for high resolution, vivid images of a sensational quality.

A great choice for wide gamut colour images destined to be framed behind glass minimising internal reflections that are possible with high gloss media. One of my favourites for colour prints.

Unless specified otherwise in the cart comments at check out, this is the default media for all colour prints when “Fine Art Specialty Photographic Print” is selected in the shopping cart.

Canvas

Ilford Galerie Premium grade 375gsm canvas with an archival rating of approximately 100 years.

After printing via the Giclee process, the print is protected by an UV stabilised overspray to seal and preserve the image.

Note due to the nature of the canvas texture, some sharpness and clarity in the image will be lost. This is not normally an issue and generally adds to the artistic effect of a canvas print. This also allows a greater range in sizing for a given image resolution.

Our standard canvas product in the shopping cart is an unstretched canvas print. This allows it to be rolled for easier and cheaper postage. The customer than can either stretch the canvas themselves over a suitable frame or take it to a local framer of their choice to do it for them.

Edge treatment options available are Image Wrap, Clone / Mirror Wrap or Colour Edge Wrap. Please specify your preference as to what edge finish you would like in the comments at check out. If no preference is noted we will simply leave the edges raw (white) by default

Image Wrap – this option means your image will continue on around the edges of your canvas. But be careful; you will lose up to 2 inches on each side when it’s stretched.

Clone / Mirror Wrap – this option is recommended if you don’t want to loose any of your image but still appreciate the look of an image continuing around. We simply copy the edges giving the feel of a continued edge.

Coloured Edge Wrap – you can choose from either a standard black or white edge, or we can pick a colour for you right out of your image. This is also an option if you want to match the edge to your colour scheme. Just let us know your colour preference when making the order otherwise we will simply leave the canvas raw (white) by default.

Unsure? Contact Us via email for further information.

Other Mounting Options

Besides the standard print only rolled products discussed above and listed on the website, we are also able to offer the following mounted products.

Canvas Mounting Options

Altlternatively we can also supply either the standard “ready to hang”  or “profile frame” mounting options upon request.

“Ready to Hang”

The standard ready to hang canvas product is the traditional canvas print stretched over a 40mm thick hard wood frame with the edges exposed and thus visible.

Edge treatment options available are Image Wrap, Clone / Mirror Wrap or Colour  Edgedge Wrap as discussed in the canvas prints section above.

“Profile Frame”

The Profile frame canvas product is the inclusion of an additional frame outside of your canvas print which gives a more finished look to the traditional ready to hang canvas product. Ideal for more formal display pieces.

Typically the outside edge is barely visible in this mounting arrangement, so unless advised otherwise the standard clone wrap is used.

We offer standard profiles in Black, White, Mocha & Jarrah.

Unsure? Contact Us via email for further information and pricing.

Matted Prints – For smaller prints we can have these mounted in a photographic matt board, covered by a protective plastic cover. This is ideal for gifts etc whereby a rolled up print can’t compete for presentation. Limited to 30” Panoramic, 20” Square and 20 x 30” Standard Full Frame sizes.

Face Mount Acrylic – By using a special adhesive, an airtight bond is created with no air bubbles, fixing your photographic print with tis face mounted to the back of a 6mm UV resistant acrylic glass. By directly gluing the face side of the print to the back sheet of acrylic, any light reflections between the photograph is eliminated. As a result, the colours seem sharper, more brilliant, more intense and more immediate.

Note the edge finish can be either straight or bevelled.

Alumalux Mount – Your print is pressed directly into aluminium, which allows for a scratch resistant, light weight, water proof product. It is available in two finishes – High Gloss & Brushed Metal. Your images will pack a punch with colour remaining vivid and details staying clear & crisp.

Aluminium Mount – This mounting differs from our Alumalux products, as this technique includes a traditional print being mounted onto aluminium; rather than infused. This means you have a variety of different papers to choose from, Fine Art would have to be our favourite.

Traditionally Framed – This is a very personal choice and is generally governed by where the print will be hung. Typically it takes some experimentation with frame types and matt colours to compliment both your desired mounting location and the image.

Our preference is for the customer to take delivery of the print and then take to a reputable professional framer for framing. We can however arrange for a quotation for customers if they have a good idea on what they would like or they are happy with standard matting and simple framing options.

Please Contact Us via email if you would like to explore any of these options.

Gloss, Metallic, Pearl or Matte?

When choosing a paper there is no real right and wrong with surface types, as almost all can produce excellent results. It really comes down to the image you have chosen and the look you want to achieve.

Gloss / Metallic Papers

Gloss papers have very smooth, highly reflective surfaces. Inherently, they offer the punchiest images due to their extremely strong blacks. The gloss surface can be prone to scratching so these papers are not ideal for handling.

Resin coated papers have a layer of smooth plastic in them so tend to be the most smooth and thus the most glossy.

Fibre based papers always have some fibre structure to them so they never quite achieve the same level of smoothness.  However they are more archival of course.

Very glossy papers can be difficult to frame due to the need for them to be held perfectly flat (indeed high gloss papers need to be so flat that even the mounting glue used can become a significant issue, resulting in a visible ‘orange peel’ effect – sometimes special pressure sensitive adhesive tissues must sometimes be used!) – and also because of reflection issues when behind glass.

Ideal for coloured high detail images.

Semi-Gloss / Pearl / Lustre Papers

Semi-Gloss papers have a slight reflective texture but are very robust and stand up well to handling – the surface tends to hide minor imperfections like finger prints and slight scratches.

They offer very deep blacks and have moderate reflection issues.

Again, the come in both resin coated and fibre based form.  In this category, resin coated has no real physical advantage – they’re just cheaper because they’re made using plastic.

The perfect all-rounder and go to paper when in doubt. Ideal for coloured images.

Matte Papers

Matte Papers are truly matte – sometimes called ultra-matte, or watercolour papers, and have no reflectivity issues at all. However they do have somewhat weaker blacks.

To combat this, the use of papers like the excellent Hahnemuehle Photo Rag offer very good blacks that stand up well to normal diffuse lighting conditions.

Smooth matte papers are the very best papers at letting the image speak because there is no surface texture or reflection to interfere with the image.

Textured matte papers can be quite beautiful and particularly with simpler images the paper texture can really add to the substance of the image presentation.

Typically used for black and white fine art images, however also suitable for coloured images. Perfect for the purist with an art paper / card like feel as opposed to the plastic photographic paper options.

The perfect choice for black and white images.

Print Size and Ratios

Most images displayed here are either in the standard full frame format ratio of 2:3, square or a panoramic cropped ratio of 3:1 or 5:2.

The native resolution of the source image file will determine the available choice in print sizing for a particular media type.

That said, if you are willing to sacrifice some quality in resolution and detail, which is normally not noticeable at normal viewing distances anyway, other sizes can be created for special projects. Please contact us via email to investigate such options and pricing.

Please also bear in mind that the finished print once framed by your professional framer will be much larger than the actual print dimensions due to border mats dimensions and frame profiles. This is something that needs to be considered when selecting a print size. Most people are surprised just how big a 10×30” panoramic print is when fully framed.

The exception to this is of course the Canvas, Aluminium and Acrylic mounted products whereby no matt border is used.

Other Sizes and Special Requests

Many of the images can be cropped to your particular requirements. For example you may wish a 5:2 ratio crop instead of the 3:1 panoramic ratio or perhaps a square version of a 3:2 standard format image.

Whilst sometimes this is not possible due to a loss of subject matter, in the majority of cases it isn’t an issue.

Contact Us via email with your requests and we will investigate the possibility of a non standard crop and provide you with an example and pricing.

Other Products

We can also supply calendars, coasters, placemats, ice blocks, screen savers etc. of your favourite images. Should you desire such a product, please Contact Us directly via email with your requirements and we will be happy to provide examples and pricing accordingly.

Most images displayed here are either in the standard full frame format ratio of 2:3 or a panoramic cropped ratio of 3:1 or 5:2.
