Last Rays (5X2BW5181)
Black and white long exposure as the last rays of light disappear over Canal Rocks near Smiths Beach, Yallingup, South West, Western Australia.
With a large swell running and overcast skies, I wanted to capture some moody dark black and white images at Canal Rocks. The odd rain shower and strong winds ensured that I wasn’t competing for space on the rocks or having to bother about others walking in front of the camera in the middle of a long exposure. This is a panoramic image looking south away from the main Canal Rocks structure.
The long exposure illustrates the flow of water around the rocks, flattening the waves in the process, making it look a lot calmer than it actually was. On this evening there were large waves pounding the rocks just offshore and on the mainland at my feet, throwing spray high into the air. On such days there is a lot of water movement moving through the channel and if one was to fall in, you would be quickly swept along and out to sea. Not a good position to be in a rapidly fading light as the sun shines its last rays over the rocks at sunset. So the upmost care needed to be taken when moving camera gear on the slippery rocks looking for alternative vantage points.
This image is a composition of several images stitched together to emulate a large format resolution. This added a degree of complexity given the exposure time of each image in a rapidly fading light. Luckily the overcast conditions helped even out the light differences from one end of the panorama to the other. The image “Sun Burst” is a single frame from this stitch, focussing on the rocks in the far right of this image.
Titled “Last Rays” to reflect the last rays of sunshine behind the offshore rocks which form the canal with the mainland.
Canal rocks are a series of rocky outcrops lined up close together, just off the mainland near Smiths Beach at Yallingup in the South West of Western Australia, which form a canal like passage between the rocks on the mainland and the rocky outcrops in the sea. A heavily visited and photographed location.
