About Me

Hi, I’m Garry

Landscape Photographer

My objective is simple… Well sort of…

As a landscape photographer I strive to accurately convey the raw emotions that mother nature often displays via thought provoking images of landscapes from within Western Australia and beyond. Occasionally those images will be biased with my own thoughts or emotions. From happy, carefree times to more dark and moody ones as I continue my journey in life and that as a partner, father and landscape photographer. I wear my heart on my sleeve, often to my own detriment, and I make no apologies for doing so. It’s who I am, and hopefully being so transparent will provide you a little insight into my thoughts when I press the shutter and why I composed things the way I did.

I grew up in the Pilbara region with the North West of Western Australia, where my love affair with the ocean and outback began.  Living, working and most importantly exploring the rugged landscapes of Western Australias remote North West, I was fortunate to have been immersed in some amazinge and unique landscapes. Some of which in my later years I have managed to capture on film and more recently digital media. It’s what drove me to become a landscape photographer in the first place. My biggest regret is not getting into photography earlier before eventually moving away. There are so many places I wanted to capture, not only for my own memories but also to share with others just how special the Pilbara region really is. Maybe one day I’ll get to spend some extended time back in that land I love, capturing her many moods and spectacluar beauty.

Being relatively shy and reserved, I tend to avoid the lime light and don’t typically enter photographic competitions or events to promote my work. I generally prefer to let my photography speak for its self, relying upon word of mouth. Possibly not the best business plan…

I aim to capture landscape images which are truly representative of the moment, with a degree of emotion and drama that only nature can provide. What you see is generally what I saw through the lens at the time. The only difference may be some minor techniques through the use of multiple or long exposures to capture extra dynamic range to ensure shadow details are not lost or to create motion blur. Filters are limited to those which control difficult lighting subjects or to slow down the shutter speed. Typical tools and methods employed by the majority of traditional landscape photographers.

I am increasingly being drawn to follow my passion in capturing dramatic landscapes in black and white. In my experience black and white images have the ability to accentuate the drama and impact far more than a colour equivalent, by illustrating the scene in shades of grey, light and contrast.  I find they have a truly artistic and timeless appeal to them, which makes such images perfect for display, where sometimes colour prints can be seen as less presentable. It also allows me to artistically convey my own emotions at the time or occasionally evoke emotions in others on purpose.

Perhaps this is a response to my inner purist which has so far limited my desire to heavily manipulate images using Photoshop or similar. Then again, maybe it’s because we constantly view things in colour and to see them portrayed in black and white is more stimulating and emotional. Whatever it is that I find so appealing about the monochrome world, I suspect that my portfolio will grow with more as time progresses.

Whether I choose to capture the scene in colour, black and white or even perhaps both, will depend on what’s in front of me, the emotion I’m trying to convey or what I think may look best when printed and hanging on a wall. Similarly I may choose to present the image in a variety of aspect ratios or crops. This may be square, standard or panoramic formats, all of which can portray a different feel to a given scene.

Whilst my desire to capture ‘real’ images results in some inner turmoil for myself, on rare occasions I may articulate a scene abstractly. Thankfully nature will often provide abstract elements or viewpoints naturally which can be emphasised by careful composition or tight subject framing. However other times I may need to employ manipulative techniques beyond normal saturation edits to emphasise a subject or highlight the abstract appeal of an image. Whilst a departure from my ‘normal’ approach, it does provides a different perspective which allows me to explore further creativity or artistic flair in my work.

Furthermore as I travel more and find myself exploring foreign cities, full of history, interesting architecture and amazing cultures, I can’t resist but capture these unique urban landscapes, mainly for my own purposes, but occasionally for commercial use. Such images are often a crossover between travel and documentary style street photography. My favourite, being streetscapes in black and white of course.

That’s one of the things that I find so appealing about photography. There are so many disciplines, techniques and artistic tangents to explore. All of which require new skills to be learnt, different equipment and practices to apply. With continual developments in technology and software further assisting in expanding the boundaries of what is or was once thought possible, constantly blurring the fine line between traditional photography and that of art. This is the blending or amalgamation of both, which perhaps is better phrased as “imagery”.
