Wyadup Rocks Sunset (3X1C2486)

Long exposure sunset at Wyadup Rocks, near Yallingup, South West, Western Australia.

An intense cloudless sunset over Wyadup Rocks, south of Yallingup in the South West of Western Australia. Composed by stitching several long exposure frames together to from a large format panoramic image. This vantage point is south of the popular Injidup Spa location.

I’m often asked if this is a HDR (High Dynamic Range) image since the colours are so saturated and vivid. The reality is it isn’t. The lime green moss on the rocks is actually that colour, especially when sunlit at sunset. It’s an amazing sight to see in real life. If anything I probably held back a touch on the raw processing as it looked too cartoon like to me. I also had some difficulty in controlling the exposure given the angle to the sun that I was shooting despite using a graduated ND filter at the time. The reality is looking into the sun at this time was extremely bright, so to remove that further wouldn’t have been accurate to the scene.

Titled “Wyadup Rocks Sunset” to reflect the location and main intent of the image.

Wyadup Rocks are located just south of Canal Rocks and north of Injidup Beach in the South West of Western Australia. A popular fishing and tourist location that like most of the South West locations is heavily photographed. It is also the home of the famous Injidup Natural Spa, where water from the ocean breaks over the outer rocks and cascades down into a protected rock pool. Popular with both tourists and locals in the summer months.

The rocks themselves are exposed to the full force of the Southern Indian Ocean. Whilst relatively safe on calmer days, they can be extremely dangerous when the swell is running and large waves pound the rocks sending spray high into the air.
